Galeb Team

Galeb Team from Serbia will perform in Poland for the first time! The Soko G-2 Galeb was the first mass-produced jet aircraft designed and built in Yugoslavia. The prototype made its maiden flight in 1961, and the aircraft was developed at the SOKO factory in Mostar as a primary training jet for the Yugoslav Air Force. The Galeb featured a simple design, straight wings, and a sturdy landing gear, making it relatively easy to fly and resistant to student pilot errors.

An interesting fact is that the G-2 Galeb was not only a training aircraft but could also serve as a light attack aircraft. It was equipped with underwing hardpoints for carrying weapons such as bombs, unguided rockets, or additional fuel tanks. Its fixed armament consisted of two 12.7 mm machine guns mounted in the nose. Thanks to this versatility, the aircraft saw combat use during the Balkan conflicts of the 1990s, even though it had originally been designed primarily for pilot training.

Another noteworthy aspect of the Galeb’s history is its export success – the aircraft was delivered, among others, to Libya and Zambia. The G-2 design also became the basis for the development of the more advanced, single-seat ground-attack aircraft, the Soko J-21 Jastreb. Although today it is considered a historic aircraft, the Galeb played a significant role in the development of the former Yugoslavia’s aviation industry and for decades formed the backbone of military pilot training there.
